“Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!”
So, my draft for Book 2 is almost complete, and today I am being very generous, and letting my characters hang out here. It’s Yangon’s Pegu Club, which was once the most famous Gentleman’s club in Asia, and allegedly where Rudyard Kipling was inspired to write his poem ‘Mandalay’ after spending an evening there in 1889 and listening to accounts of British officers who had been posted in Upper Burma following the British conquest of Burma’s second city in 1885.
Gorgeous, isn’t it?
You can see more awesome photographs of Yangon’s crumbling colonial architecture here, (which is where I pinched this from): http://www.jjmcphoto.com/gallery/
You can read Kipling’s Mandalay here. Please do. It’s a cracker: http://www.kipling.org.uk/poems_mandalay.htm
